Gaslight

Cast of Bedroom Farce

Thriller is a Classic

Gaslight by Patrick Hamilton is one of the classic plays of the 1930s – not classic in being a great play with a momentous message, or superb characters, but a classic because it is thundering good entertainment. Since first produced in 1939 it has become a successful film, and now 45 years later, it continues as first choice for countless repertory and amateur companies throughout the English-speaking world. Yet more royalties for the Hamilton estate – he died in 1962 – came last week from The Guild Players with three performances at The Kilshawe Theatre. It is a tense tale of a man who murdered once, cunningly trying to send his wife mad as he searches for jewels, which eluded him 20 years earlier. Alex Thomson directed and created the gloom of Victorian London as he built up to an exciting climax. He also played Rough, the ex‑detective, who solves the problem of the flickering gaslight, the murder and the missing jewels. It is a well-written part, and Alex presented a wholly credible character. Christopher Sewell was the sadistic murderer back at the scene of the crime and his performance expressed the cunning of the man to perfection. Kath Fox was the unfortunate woman being driven out of her mind. Her characterisation was inclined to be over placid and under-played. Even in the final moments when her husband is at last at her mercy there was no high note. An accomplished performer but I found her uneasy in this role. Heather Dedman was excellent as a sympathetic servant, and Jessica Robinson had impact as the sex hungry maid. Two soundly portrayed cameos.
