Mort
Plenty of life in play about death
The Guild Players took their audience to Terry Pratchett’s Discworld with their latest production Mort. The play is a comedy centred around the life and work of Death, played to great effect by Linda Mewes, who really brought the character of Death to life. Lead character Mort is a young man who becomes an apprentice to Death and was played with excellent comic timing by Luke Breen in his debut with the Players. The play follows his attempts to help out Death out. Mort is eventually left in charge for an evening and wrongly prevents the death of Princess Keli played very effectively by Debbie Pinfold. In his attempts to sort out the situation he seeks the help of the magician Cutwell played confidently by Paris Robinson. A special mention needs to be made to the doorknocker of the magician’s house which was played to great comic effect by Mary Kettyle. Duncan Currie's performance as Death's servent Albert, an infamous wizard, attracted some of the loudest laughs of the night. Mort marries Ysabell the adopted daughter of Death played well by Kate Hibbert. The main cast were well supported by a number of other guild members playing a variety of smaller roles. The story was well interpreted and for a few hours a part of Deal became Discworld
thanks to clever direction by Fred Sawyer and Bliss Wilson.
